Cluster of Excellence Multiscale Bioimaging: from molecular Machines to Networks of Excitable Cells (MBExC)

„Multiscale Bioimaging: from molecular Machines to Networks of excitable cells (MBExC)“ is a Cluster of Excellence funded since 2019 as part of the Excellence Strategy of the German Government and the federal states (Bundesländer) at the University of Göttingen.

Spokespersons of the Cluster are Prof. Tobias Moser (University Medical Center), Prof. Claudia Steinem (University of Göttingen, Faculty of Chemistry), and Prof. Patrick Cramer (Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry).

The scientists of the cluster follow a unique approach, bridging the neurosciences and cardio-vascular research, to investigate fundamental processes in the cardiac and nervous system in its entire complexity – from the molecular up to organ level. This multiscale approach is based on the pioneering breakthroughs in optical nanoscopy, X-ray imaging, and electron tomography. The overall aim is to decipher disease-relevant nanoscale functional units of cardiac and neural excitable cells.
